It's hard to let go of some trends when they start their journey into obscurity. It could be a top that fits you just right, a piece of jewelry that brings out the color of your eyes, or a hairstyle that complements your face shape. But as hard as it is, once they start looking dated, we know we have to retire them to the fashion history books.
Then there are other trends. Trends that we can't wait to get rid of. Trends that we would gladly provide a swift kick in the butt to get them out the door faster.
If there was ever a trend that many of us were glad to be rid of, it was super low-rise pants. Super low-rises barely covered your rear. They could give a model a muffin top and even the daintiest of girls a plumber's crack. But thankfully they've been pushed out of the spotlight, and replaced with the much more flattering high-waisted designs.
At one point, these designs were shamefully known as "mom jeans." But thanks to a some very skilled designers, they're now the go-to style for women of all shapes and sizes. Daily Mail spotted high-waist styles on Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Alba at the launch of Alba's collaboration with fashion line DL1961. Both decided to finish the outfit with layered tops. Witherspoon wore a smart, fitted blazer over a collared shirt for a chic look, while Alba took a sporty route with a bomber jacket over a fitted, black camisole.
The style is great for plus-size shapes as well. In an article for Bustle, Associate Fashion & Beauty Editor Marie Southard Ospina told writer Rachel Krantz that the style was much more comfortable for a fuller figure. Instead of cutting off the silhouette at the base of the belly, the higher silhouette accentuates an hourglass shape that's always flattering.
And it's not just pants. The trend has bled into new skirt designs as well. A colorful high-waisted skirt is featured on the homepage for Lyst, a high-fashion clothing aggregator. Completing the ensemble with a more masculine, blue and white button-up, the image perfectly showcases the high-waisted style's overwhelming ability to exude a fun, feminine, and flirty look—proving that these styles have far surpassed their once unfair title of "mom jeans."
So the next time you're in the market for some new clothes, ditch the low riders and embrace high-rise pants and skirts. The style is very hot right now, and even better, you'll never have to worry about a muffin top, or flashing more than you intended to when you bend over.
